"I asked for experts not 6000 teachers" -Pres. Weah clarifies amidst public criticisms

President George Manneh Weah has denied recent reports that he requested Nigeria to aid the country with 6000 teachers.

The news of the Liberian leader making the request spread like a wild-fire around the country, with some Liberians condemning the move, noting it was against the President’s “Pro-poor” governance approach which seeks to empower Liberians through the provision of more jobs.

But speaking to reporters upon his arrival from Abuja, Nigeria on Tuesday, President Weah clarified that he instead asked for few experts from Nigeria to teach 6,000 teachers in Liberia as a way to help strengthened the country education system.

The lack of trained teachers has been considered as one of the key problems faced by the Liberian educational sector which was described as ‘messy’ by former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

“When I was going to Nigeria I asked the Minister of Education and he said we have a gap of 6000 teachers that needed to be trained, so when I was in Abuja, I asked President Muhammadu Buhari and the people of Nigeria to help us with experts to train our teachers. I did not ask for 6000 teachers,” Pres. Weah clarified.

Contrary to this, President Weah was quoted by the Nigerian media of seeking support of 6000 teachers from Nigeria, which is also faced with huge educational problem after a close-door meeting with President Buhari at the Presidential Vila on Monday.

“More specifically, under the Bilateral Teacher Exchange Programme, we are seeking 6,000 plus teachers to make up for the shortage of good teachers in our educational system”, President Weah was quoted by the PUNCH, a Nigerian media outlet.

According to the National Teachers Association of Liberia (NTAL), the country currently has an estimated number of 45,000 teachers within both the private and public sectors. 

Moreover, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has a reported target of one teacher to 50 students, meaning there is need for the recruitment of more teachers.
