Sports Ministry, Internal Affairs upbeat of County Meet success

With less than four days to the official start of this year National County Sports Meet, the organizers have assured Liberians that all is in place for the successful hosting of the games

The Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Internal Affairs are the organizers of the nation’s most followed sporting events.

Speaking at a joint news conference Monday at the SKD Sports Complex in Paynesville, Minister Zoegar Wilson said the major intend is to unite Liberians and foster peace and reconciliation, especially after a bitter electoral process.

“You all know sports unify people. Liberia has a reach history of the 1979 six nations’ tournament hosted by our late former president Samuel Kanyon Doe.

That tournament was hosted to united The Gambia and Senegal when they had their own internal conflict so the Country Meet has over the years been hosted to unite Liberian and this time the urgency can’t be overstated,” Wilson said.

He also confirmed that the opening ceremony will be held in Gbarnga, Bong County, while games will as well be played at the remaining three venues.

Meanwhile Minister Wilson expressed disappointment over the failure of athletes, especially soccer athletes of their refusal l to play for clubs after featuring in the National County Meet.

He noted that the intend of the competition is to scout players who could be signed by clubs, noting the rules may be changed to avoid such.

 He also confirmed that basketball, volleyball and female soccer will be added to the next edition of the tournament.

 For his part, Internal Affairs Minister Varney Sirleaf said the county meet has over the time being used as a means of providing short-term employment opportunities for young people as well business people and such is usually anticipated.

He also confirmed that each of the counties received US$ 8000.00 earlier, but noted that additional funds will be given.

Greenville, Sinoe County will play host to Group A activities, where Maryland, Grand Kru, River Gee and Sinoe Counties will battle against each other.

Group B games will come on in Gbarnga Bong County, where the host will face Nimba, Lofa and Grand Gedeh Counties

Group C matches will be played at the Doris Williams Sports Pitch in Buchanan Grand Bassa County. That venue will host matches involving, Defending Champions, Montserrado County, Margibi County, and Rivercess Counties.

Robertsports will host Group D games, where Cape Mount will battle Gbarpolu and Bomi Counties.
