As part of this year’s commemoration of World Water Day celebration held on the theme: “Nature For Water,” a non –governmental Organization, Liberia NGO Network, organized a one day national stakeholders gathering with the aim of promoting the sustainable development goals in Liberia. The Liberia NGO Network is also a WASH group.
The platform created the opportunity for stakeholders to discuss the level of progress made by government in domesticating the SDGs.
Mr. George Kayah, Head of the NGO Secretariat, stressed the importance for Government to come up with a clear plan before the reviewing of the SDGS in July this year.
He said it would be expedient for delegates attending the review meeting to have an insight as to which goals government wants to align with its Pro-poor Agenda.
Assistant Public Works Minister for Administration, Jefferson Chesson says the government of Liberia is committed to appointing officials to the WASH commission to enable it become more functional.
Assistant Minister Chesson indicated that the commission is significant to the governments of Liberia Pro –poor Agenda.
The Assistant Public Works Minister made the remarks Tuesday at the one-day forum organized by LINNK to promote the sustainable development Goals in Liberia.
Serving as a panelist at the forum, a staff of UNDP, Jefferson Kamara said sustainable development Goals implementation is a collective endeavor.
Mr. Kamara noted that popularizing the SDGs requires broad base participation, consultation and sensitization.
He said coordination and resource mobilization is key to domesticating the Sustainable Development Goals in Liberia.
Also speaking on the SDGs domestication, a staff of the Ministry of Finance and Developing Planning, Niemen Reeves, said government has put into place programs intended to promote the SDGs in Liberia.
Mr. Reeves disclosed that since the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations, the government of Liberia has worked in partnership with the UNDP to align the SDGs into national development goals of the country.
He said as a result of government’s engagement, the Buchanan declaration was adopted to promote specified number of the goals in line with the government’s development agenda.
At the end of the forum, several civil Society groups have agreed to form themselves into thematic groups to promote each of the 17 goals .
According to the CSO actors, doing this will accelerate progress on the part of Liberia in popularizing the SDGs.
The one day forum was held as part of activities commemorating World Water Action Month under the theme Water For Nature.
It brought together several CSO actors, school administrators, residents of swamp communities amongst others.
