The Liberian National Children’s Representative Forum has called for the re-arrest of former Liberia National Students Union (LINSU) Leader Varney Jersey.
Speaking at a news conference in Monrovia Wednesday, the Speaker of the Forum, Jutomue Doetein said since Mr. Jersey was released on bail, he has not returned to prison, something he said undermines justice for children in Liberia.
It can be recalled that the former LINSU president was charged with statutory rape in late November 2016 after a father of a 13-year-old girl had complained to the police and accused Jersey of raping his daughter at his Mamba Point Residence in October 2013.
However, the ex-LINSU President was in April of this year released on bail by Presiding Judge Serena Garlawolo of Criminal Court “E” following a ruling in a motion filed by Jersey’s lawyer, Cllr. Arthur Johnson, citing his deteriorating health status while in prison.
“In the wake of the much violence perpetrated against Liberian children, our attention has seriously been draw to the issue of former student leader in person of Varney Jersey, who was alleged of raping a-13-year-old girl in October 31, 2016 in the Mamba point Community. Since April of this year when Mr. Jersey was released, he has been found in social gathering and roaming around the country very healthily,” Mr. Doetein said.
He continued: “We are also told that Varney Jersey is expected to play an active role in the upcoming Liberia national students union Election”.
“We believed that it is an injustice to free Varney on a longer medical and unconditional bail, we like to be cleared that there were people in prison for similar action long before Varney entered the prison, but now he is moving around like an ordinary Liberian while people he met in prison are still in prison sick”.
The Liberian Children Speaker further noted that the action to free Mr.Jersey on a bail was a strategy to compromise his case, stressing that is a wrong direction to the dispensation of justice in Liberia.
He is therefore calling on the Liberian government through the Ministry of Justice and the Supreme Court to of Liberia have Mr. Jersey Re-arrested in 72 hours.
Mr. Doetiein further warned Jersey is cleared by the Ministry of Justice; he should not participate in any public activity.
“We will not discontinue the fight for justice in Liberia; therefore, we call on the authorities concerned to listen to us as children of the Republic of Liberia, who have been heavily affected by the inhuman action of men and women in Liberia,” the Children Speaker added.
He concluded: “Our calls today is not about, Varney Jersey, but a call which should catch the attention of the Supreme Court to speedily investigate all cases on its desk including the case of Momolu Sirleaf of the Ministry Health”.
