The Green Consultancy Inc in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has released a report on Liberia, “Titled Second State of Environment report (SOER) covering the period of 2007-2018.
The report was released at a one –day inception Workshop, held at the Corina Hotel in Monrovia on Monday September 10, 2018, under the theme: “Keep Environment Safe and Clean”.
The day-long Environmental Workshop outlined the issues affecting waters, forestall plants, soil contamination and it provided Comprehensive Assessment of the environment in the Liberia.
The report also highlighted and identified areas of main focus by the National Environmental Action plan (NEAP) and to be catered by relevant Government institutions.
Speaking at the symposium, EPA Manager Z. Elizah Whapoe said that the report prescribed the main activities of the agency and update on the Environment provided by lines ministries and agency.
He noted that section 82.83 calls for the protection and conservation of the Biodiversity among others things.
Mr.Whapoe disclosed that the first attempt on the State of the Environment Report was made in 2001, through the financial support of UNDP and the protection of strengthening the national Environmental commission of Liberia (NEECOLIB).
For his part, the Assistant Minister for Urban Affairs at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Abubakar Bahn pledged the ministry support toward the Green Consultancy and EPA plan of assessing the Environment after every five years.
He noted that maintaining the environment is very crucial and important to the development of any nation.
”Once” we do not put our environment first we are endangering our health and so taking serious actions and maintaining the environment is important,” he added.
Minister Bah further noted that the report is significant to the development of the country and it is about time for the Government of Liberia to put in strong measures to protect and secure the environment.
“Since 1992 we have not conducted an environment report and that is bad, for now we should be talking about several reports,” he added.
