The Liberian National Red Cross Society has launched a 24-hour Ambulance service for Monrovia and its environs.
Speaking Friday at a news conference in Monrovia, Red Cross Secretary General Sayba Tamba said the launch of the Ambulance Service is geared towards assisting people in Monrovia and its environs who often use commercial or private vehicles to transport patients to health centers.
“Our ambulance service especially at night is to assist people in Monrovia and its environs who often use commercial and private vehicles, motorbikes and tri-cycles to transfer patients including pregnant women to health facilities, which sometimes delay and further endanger the lives of the patients,” she said.
Madam Tamba added that the Ambulance Service will complement the effort of the government and partners.
“Like our clinic, the ambulance service will complement the effort of the government and partners in providing transportation that will be freely available and accessible to everyone in Monrovia and its environs as the need arises our emergency numbers are 1155forOrange subscribers and 1919 for Lonetstar subscribers. Your responsibility is to know the number and make a call and together we will save a life,”she added.
The Red Cross Secretary General added that the National Society will work with the Ministry of Health and other health centers for a stronger collaboration and coordination.
Meanwhile, the LNRCS has seriously condemned the misuse of the Red emblem in the country.
“Wehave observed the misuse of the Red Cross emblem on drug stores, ambulances, pharmacies, etc. This misuse could reduce the prestige of the emblem, jeopardize its protective function, and is a violation in accordance with Article 3 Section 8.1 of the Liberian Red Cross Act,” Secretary General Tamba disclosed.
Madam Tamba added that the Red Cross emblem is a legally protected symbol, noting only the medical unit of the Armed Forces of Liberia, the Ministry of Health and the Liberian Red Cross are the legally authorized users of the Red Cross emblem.
“This life-saving symbols need to be understood and trusted by all, therefore it is crucial that the emblems be displayed correctly, and only by those authorized to do so by law. We are calling on those involved in the misuse of the Red Cross emblem to immediately desist,” she warned.
